Physical Therapy Modalities
Ice
packs to reduce swelling, inflammation, and muscle spasm. Used most
frequently in acute injuries, but also an effective pain reliever
for even the most chronic pain.
EGS
- Electro Galvanic Stimulation
Application of electrical stimulation, usually prescribed to aid in
improving strength, for example, for the quadriceps muscle after
knee surgery or injury. Used to decrease pain and swelling and to
relieve muscle spasm.
Cervical
Traction
Gentle longitudinal pull on the cervical spine, manual or
mechanical, intermittent or static. Usually prescribed for relief of
cervical swelling in the nerve
roots due to local trauma
and
muscle spasm.
Hydrocollator or moist heat.
Usually prescribed to improve superficial circulation, relax
musculature and relieve pain.
Pelvic
Traction
Longitudinal pull on the lumbar spine, manual or mechanical,
intermittent or static. Relief of lumbar radicular
pain and muscle spasm.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
Relatively low voltage applied over painful areas through small
self-adhesive electrodes. The electrical stimulation "disguises" or
"overrides" the sensation of pain. It is a small, portable unit,
ideally worn throughout the day or at intervals, to control pain and
reduce dependence on drugs. Usually prescribed for relief from pain
due to almost everything from muscle spasm to terminal cancer.
Ultrasound
Deep tissue heating. Used prior to stretching of muscle or
connective tissue, and for relief of pain and muscle spasm.
